WHAT ARE MY KITCHEN CABINETS ACTUALLY MADE OF?
As one of the premium makers of kitchen cabinets and custom-made cabinetry in Sydney, Total Kitchens have years of experience in creating beautiful kitchen cabinets from a range of materials, from the high end to the budget. What most customers don’t understand is that kitchen cabinets need to be made of different materials for different purposes, not just for the aesthetic of the kitchen. So what are your kitchen cabinets made of anyway?
If you have ever bought flat pack furniture (Ikea, we are looking at you!) you will find that most anything that comes in a flat pack is made of particle board. Because it is cheap to produce, lightweight and easy to work with, particle board makes up a large percentage of the materials used in today’s cabinetry, from the surrounding boxes to shelving.
Most laminates are actually made of a particle board interior with a laminate coating exterior, providing them with superior lasting and abilities and strength. The team from Laminex can actually produce your kitchen cabinets in either MDF, plywood or particle board with their signature coloured coating, depending on what material you prefer and where your budget sits.
MDF is another composite timber, similar to particle board but with more adhesive to make it stronger and denser. Generally speaking, MDF is used for the exterior parts of your cabinetry that will suffer the worst wear and tear and looks better than particle board because of its finer grain.
Plywood isn’t used as often as the other options above because it is getting more and more expensive to use. While still a composite timber product, it is very strong and provides good structure to your cabinetry with good rigidity and stability. It can be used for decorative purposes, to show a natural wood grain without the excessive weight or cost of hardwoods.
Most often found in commercial kitchens and gaining in popularity due to the rise of industrial styles available now for kitchens, stainless steel is the ultimate wear and tear product for your kitchen. Water won’t damage it, it will last a lifetime and it cleans really easily. But be warned! Stainless steel cabinets in your home can look really harsh and like you’re working in hospitality, and they scuff and fingerprint like nothing else. A no-go-zone if you like your kitchen to look pristine.
Kitchen cabinets can be made of most materials, but the 5 above are the most common found in Sydney kitchen renovations as they offer the best value for money, best functionality and the longest lasting abilities in kitchens. By using the right materials, you can be sure to have a kitchen that will last a lifetime.
